The world’s leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel has now come to Southern.

Nike, in association with Billings Sports and the athletic department, have reached a sponsorship agreement over the summer that will supply all 19 teams at Southern with uniforms, equipment and footwear.

“You’re going to see a consistency in our apparel and it’s going to be a consistent look within the department,” said Director of Athletics Patricia D. Nicol. “We are going to phase this in through several years; eventually you will see all of our student athletes in Nike attire.”

Students moving into to Farnham Hall last weekend were welcomed to their new home with CC’s, new and former residents and construction.

The building has been under construction throughout this past summer, according to Jackie Ajello, a junior science education major and CC on the second floor of Farnham.

“They are redoing the lobbies, similar to West Campus,” said Ajello, who was living on campus this summer during the construction. “The windows are going to be energy efficient and they are redoing the basement to provide more programming space.”

With new features such as personal event calendars, contact lists and more storage space, the new Southern e-mail sounds like a great change, but students have a different opinion.

On April 1, the new Owls e-mail was launched with a whole list of new features that included 10gb of storage space, mobile access and spam filters.

On May 15, the MySCSU e-mail was shut down and students were required to sign up for the new owls mail if they wanted to receive important e-mails about housing and registration.

Students gathered by the hundreds at the annual Student Appreciation Day recently. “Southern’s Got Your Back” featured food, give-aways, haircuts and an afternoon of awareness. The event, sponsored by Programs Council and the Drug and Alcohol Resource Center, encouraged students to acknowledge the dangers of drinking and driving.

“This is a good thing,” said Connecticut State Police Sgt. Greg Guerra. “There are several different displays. Students listen to what we have to say before getting a ticket they can cash in for food or T-shirts.”

Tuition for out-of-state students

With out-of-state tuition costing more than triple the price of in-state, students like junior Ariel Walker, who is originally from Brooklyn, NY, are happy to have the chance to pay in-state fees.

Walker, a physics major, said he lived in New York growing up but went to high school in Connecticut and pays in-state tuition.

“I came to Southern for the affordability,” he said. “I got accepted to Temple [University] and a few other schools in the tri-state area, but I would have been charged out-of-state prices for it and this is the cheapest out of all the schools.”

J. Crew, Gap, Budweiser and boxes of macaroni and cheese are some “media texts” media studies professor Ro Conforti has had her students look at for class. When looking at such texts, her students aren’t studying the product; they are looking at how the product is sold to boys and girls of all ages and how the advertisements contribute to stereotypes involving age and gender.

“We’ve looked at how cereal (boxes) usually do not contain images of characters of women,” said Conforti, using a recent example from one of her classes. “They are usually characters of men.”

Finals week is approaching, and senior psychology major Michelle Drury said she feels like she is already done with school.

“I think they call that senioritis,” she said.

Finals are scheduled for the week of May 17, which means it is coming down to the wire of assignments being handed in and studying for exams.

“I am preparing for finals by studying and writing all of my papers in advance,” Drury said. “This way I can relax a little bit and I won’t feel so frustrated while I'm studying for my final exams.”

Have a question? Text Buley.

“Text-a-librarian allows people to send messages using their cell phones to a web interface which librarians can log into and use the web platform to answer back to students,” digital services librarian Lisa Carlucci Thomas said.

Mosio, a mobile technology agency, is the company Southern chose to use for its SMS service.

Journalism Professor Jerry Dunklee said he plans to deny the charges brought against him when, according to police records, he was arrested April 30 for second degree breach of peace and public indecency.

“On the advice of my attorney I can’t say anything about the case, except we deny these charges and will contest them vigorously,” said Dunklee, who was released from police custody on a promise to appear.
